Byblos, the oldest known continuously inhabited city in the world was founded about 7,000 years ago. The Neolithic people were the first to live in the city, followed by the Chalcolithes, the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Phoenicians, the Assyrians, the Babylonians and the Persians. It was later conquered by Alexander the Great to usher in the Greek Period in the City and later gave way to the coming of the Romans. The Byzantines were in Byblos between 395-637 AD. The Arab rule followed in 637 AD and later fell to the Crusaders in 1104 before the arrival of the Mamlukes and the Othmans, who ruled the city until the French Mandate at the end of the First World War. It came under the Lebanese sovereignty in 1943. The campsite of Amchit with its attractive beaches and lovely traditional houses is situated North of Byblos and is home to the famous French writer, Ernest Renan. The Jeita Grotto is the world most magnificent and astonishing caves, where the action of water has created cathedral-like vaults beneath the wooded hills of Mount Lebanon. The caves and galleries are located 20 km North of Beirut.
