His Excellency,

Dr. Jonathan Goodluck,

Vice President

The Federal Republic of Nigeria

His Excellency,

Chief Ojo Maduekwe

Minister of Foreign Affairs,

The Federal Republic of Nigeria

Like any nation-state within the international system, and in accordance with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Beirut performs diplomatic and consular functions in the Republics of Lebanon and Syria. Essentially, the Embassy promotes and strengthens existing relations between Nigeria and Lebanon on the one hand, and Nigeria and Syria on the other hand.

Both Nigeria and Lebanon share identical views on global and regional issues especially on the arms race, disarmament, world peace and security as well as Middle East peace. As part of the UN peacekeeping force, Nigeria has contributed to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) operating in south Lebanon.

During the Second Republic (October 1979 – December 1983), the Federal Republic of Nigeria established an embassy in Beirut. Regrettably, the Nigerian Mission in Beirut was closed down because of the Lebanese civil war. The Nigerian Embassy was re-opened in Beirut in early February 2000 at the ambassadorial level with His Excellency, Ambassador M.S. Abdul – Wahab, mni as the first Nigerian resident ambassador in Beirut. The Republic of Lebanon opened its own embassy in Lagos and is now in the process of building a befitting Embassy in Nigeria’s new Federal Capital, Abuja.
